What are the most common criticisms and the most serious criticisms leveled against policing?

I would say the most common and also one of the most serious criticism leveled against police in my state would be racial profiling. This has really reared it ugly head since the passing of SB1070. Citizens as well as some police officers, believe that after the bill take effect on July 29, 2010, that they will either be racially profiled or have to racial profile individuals who do not fit into the what they fell or think what an American citizen looks like. This has caused a huge uproar among many people across the country. Many individuals feel as though police will be pulling over or harassing any individual whose skin is not the right color. Phoenix police officer David Salgado feels as though he will be made to discriminate against individuals who have the same hispanic background, which will cause problems with his job. He believes that "If he refuses to enforce the act, he can be disciplined by his employer or subjected to costly private enforcement actions under the act, ... Conversely, if he enforces the act, he can be subjected to costly civil actions alleging the deprivation of civil rights of the individual against whom he enforces the act." (Fischer, 2010 para 15)Another example of criticism usually falls under corruption/misconduct in some form or another. Usually this corruption/misconduct usually involves some sort of abuse of power by police officers, from civil rights all the way to false arrest. This criticism can be very serious and after they are investigated by Internal Affairs, will be either proven or disproved.Fischer, Howard.
