There are a number of types of underlying rock in the Lake District, each of which contributes to the particular feel of the landscape in the various parts of the region. Generally speaking, the higher, more jagged fells in the central lakes are made up of hard wearing rocks of the Borrowdale Volcanic group with igneous intrusions. Further north and east, the more rounded fells are made up of sandstone overlying Skiddaw slate. In the south, limestone overlies silts and shales, presenting landscapes more redolent of the Yorkshire Dales or White Peak.
