Mata Hari has been the subject of or character in dozens of movies, books, and songs, even Video Games and a pinball machine. Mata Hari was already widely known as an exotic dancer and courtesan before her arrest, contributing to her fame as a femme fatal double agent. "Mata Hari" has become a synonym for a double-dealing, seductive woman. An internet search will reveal vast amounts of information on Mata Hari. Nathan Hale is perhaps one of the most famous of spies during the American Revoloution.

I think it does bear saying the point of being an active spy is that you are unnoticed. Mata Hari in WW1 as opposed to British Nurse Edith Cavell is an interesting comparison. In the Peninsular war Colquhoon Grant rode on horseback in full uniform defying French capture while observing their movements. i suppose the architype is James Bond, but of course that is fiction.
