Save themselves! You can't help anyone else if you become disabled or killed while on scene. There is an old trick question taught at first aid lectures...
The instructors will ask "Why should you learn First Aid?" Everyone will say "So I can save someone's life." "Wrong!" says the instructor, "It's so that YOU can save your OWN life!" Same thing as firefighting- you have to available to do any good...

Only if they are going to drive when on duty. Some firemen are not trained or qualified to drive the fire equipment
This varies by the department you are work for. The most common shift for payed firefighters is 24/48. 24/48 means 24 hours on duty, and 48 hours off duty. The reason it is so long is because it is one of the most stressful occupations.

The right to vote.
It's kind of strange compared to most jobs. It's fairly typical for a firefighter to be "on duty" for 24 hours straight, and then off for 48. "On duty" does not necessarily mean actually fighting a fire; firefighters can sleep, cook, eat, play games, or whatever during that 24 hours, but they have to be at the fire station and prepared to roll out if an alarm comes in.
