For some reason, the lassies look forward to this visit. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Dates variable, this year in August. The Braemar Gathering (Highland Games) - first Saturday in September. Halloween (the eve of All Hallows Day) - December 31. The Glasgow Fair - end of July. There are plenty of other festivals, the Scots not being folk to let the chance of a drink and a dance go by.

Scotland as a consequence does not undergo as much Romanisation of its culture as England and Wales. Kingdom of the Picts - formation of modern Scotland in border terms. William Wallace and Robert the Bruce's wars of independence which succeed in driving Edward I of England out of Scotland, and ending his claims to the Scottish throne. Scottish Reformation - break with the Papacy in 1560 and approval of Protestant faith. Acts of Union with England and Wales in 1707 - Scotland became part of Great Britain by acts of Parliament in London and Edinburgh. Jacobite Rebellion - Supporters of the Stuart monarchy rebel and invade England to restore the Stuart monarchy to the throne after the Glorious Revolution. Ends with defeat for the Jacobites at Culloden in 1746 (the last pitched battle on British soil). Followed by the destruction of the clans in the highlands by forced eviction. Scottish Enlightenment - gave the world such men as Robert Burns, James Watt, Adam Smith. Combined with the Industrial Revolution it made Scotland into an intellectual and economic powerhouse. Devolution in 1997 - Scottish Parliament created and has sat ever since.
