coriolis effect and prevailing westerlies
A prevailing wind is one that commonly blows from one direction.
Prevailing Winds- Are winds that 'normally' blow in the same direction over large areas of Earth. For instance the prevailing winds across the Island forming the United Kingdom would be south westerlies.
This may surprise you- the distance across the 9 main islands is only about 385 miles, but Hawaii covers about 1,500 miles in length. This is due to the numerous small, uninhabited MINOR islands that are part of the state.
Hawaii. It is a chain of islands stretching across the tropical northern Pacific Ocean.
The State of Hawaii is composed of 132 islands, reefs and shoals that extend for over 1500 miles across the central North Pacific Ocean from the "Big Island" of Hawaii to Midway and Kure Atolls.
The prevailing winds in Hawaii are from the east. Winds arriving from that direction have accumulated a large burden of water as they blow across the open ocean. As they reach the islands the air hits the mountains and must rise. That causes the temperature to fall and water to condense out as rain. By the time the same air reaches the western sides of the islands it has lost much of that water, and has dropped down from the mountains, becoming warmer and thus reducing its relative humidity. As a result the east gets much more rain than the western side.
