Shabbat, is actually the most important and sacred day of Judaism with Yom Kippur following it as a close second. It is a weekly acknowledgment of 2 essential beliefs in Judaism. First that God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th day, and 2d that He saved us from slavery in Egypt, and brought us into His land of Israel (Holy land) to grow closer to him, and live by his laws (Torah).

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the most solemn and observed holy day of the Jewish year. Originally the day on which the High Priest would enter the Temple's Holy of Holies, making atonement for himself, his fellow priests and all of Israel (Leviticus ch.16), the day is now one of prayer only, following the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by Roman forces in the year 70 CE.

The day begins just before sundown with recitation of the Kol Nidre, an ancient legal pronouncement, negating certain types of vows. The next 24-26 hours will be spent in total fasting, with prayer services and study. The services include Yizkor (a remembrance of those who have already passed away), the Avodah service, recalling the actions of the High Priest on this day, and more.

Yom Kippur ends when three stars are visible in the evening sky and the Shofar, the ram's horn, is sounded in a long blast.
