Myeloschisis is the most serious form. The cord is open and is wide. The spinal folds fail to fuse entirely. What is left is a flattened mass of nerves. Effects of this form are hydrocephalus, partial paralysis, bowel and bladder control problems and learning disabilities.

There is no treatment or cure for this. Physical treatment can be used: closure of the defect in the first 24 hours, medications, and physiotherapy. Children can live into adulthood just as people who have had polio or who have been involved in accidents with spinal injuries.

How did Nicholas Tulp discover the birth defect Spina Bifida?

He didn't "discover" it. One can see Spina Bifida quite plainly when an infant is born, unless it is the most mild form thereof, called Spina Bifida Occulta. What Nicholas Tulp did was give Spina Bifida its name and he also gave the first medical description of it.

Can someone with Spina Bifida have it all their life and not get diagnosis until they are in their thirties?

If they have the most mild form of Spina Bifida, called Spina Bifida Occulta, then yes, this is certainly possible. Spina Bifida Occulta often shows no outward signs and is many times not discovered until the person has an x-ray or other procedure in which the spine is seen.

Is diastematomyelia the same as Spina Bifida?

No, scoliosis and spina bifida are not the same. Scoliosis means your spine is crooked. Spina bifida is a birth defect in which the spine does not completely close during the first trimester of the baby's development in the womb, and the baby is born, in the most severe form of spina bifida, with part of the nerves of the spine and even part of the spinal cord itself, outside the body. It is possible to have both scoliosis and spina bifida at the same time, but they are two different conditions.

Why do spina bifidas get upset stomachs when hving their period?

In the first place, people who have Spina Bifida are not called "Spina Bifidas," they are people who HAVE Spina Bifida. Second, I am a female who has Spina Bifida and I do not get an upset stomach when on my period. Perhaps what you are really thinking of are simply menstrual cramps, which is something most women have during their menstruation, not particularly women with Spina Bifida.

How you know you got spina bifida?

Children with spina bifida often have hydrocephalus, which consists of excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain.According to the Spina Bifida Association of America (SBAA), over 73 percent of people with spina bifida develop an allergy to latex, ranging from mild to life-threatening. The common use of latex in medical facilities makes this a particularly serious concern. The most common approach to avoid developing an allergy is to avoid contact with latex-containing products such as examination gloves, catheters, and many of the products used by dentists.
