The CSS Alabama was a warship built in Great Britain. It was built secretly, expressly for the use of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
The USS Monitor was a US warship. The CSS Virginia was a Confederate warship. While it was considered a draw, the Virginia did not see action again.
Because it was an unarmed civilian ship, not a warship, and they sank it without warning.

The Confederate submarine, the Hunley was the first submarine to successfully sink a warship. It however, was dragged down to destruction during the battle in Charleston Harbor.
Because, until the Battle of the Coral Sea in May '42; navies had been fighting and sinking each other by gunfire & torpedoes...but at least it was all done by sailors! Then came the carriers...and airmen began sinking ships (sailors). At Coral Sea not one warship got a chance to shoot at another warship. And that was a naval battle!
