Early in the history of the solar system, after earth had formed and stratified into core, mantle, and crust very similar to its current structure but was still being hit very frequently by bodies of various sizes still left orbiting the sun. One of these objects was almost the size of mars today. This object hit at a shallow angle, scooping out a large section of earth's mantle and releasing enough energy to completely melt both earth and itself. The melted mass of mantle material mixed with melted material from the object and most of this molten mass was captured in orbit around earth, forming the moon. The earth and moon then cooled, with the earth again stratifying into core, mantle, and crust.
