In a subduction zone, the dense, cold oceanic plate collides with the lighter, warmer continental plate and is forced down underneath it into the mantle. The motion is downwards and the force is called "slab pull".

Subduction Zone
At the subduction zone of two tectonic plates.
Most notable is the so-called 'Ring of Fire', an area encircling the Pacific Ocean where oceanic crustal plates are subducting under continental plates and less dense oceanic plates.

Subduction Zone
A subduction zone is a place that occurs between two tectonic plates. It is the site where these tectonic plates have collided.
It is called a subduction zone.
A subduction zone is a convergent boundary where two tectonic plates collide.
Subduction is when two plates collide, and one moves underneath the other, or subducts. The denser one is the one that subducts. Subduction is caused by the collision of two plates.
