The motivational factor for soldiers fighting in World War I sometimes began and ended with "for each other", that is, unit loyalty with each man looking out for the other. Quite typically, however, soldiers were motivated out of love for family and friends and home-communities -- to protect them from the enemy. Very often, soldiers fought as patriots: they dedicated themselves to advancing their nation's cause, even to the point of sacrificing their individual lives for its sake.
