Motive in a story refers to the reason behind a character's actions. For example, a character may have a motive of revenge due to a past betrayal, or a motive of greed to attain wealth and power. Understanding a character's motive can drive the plot forward and add depth to their actions and decisions.

In the more general meaning of the term, it is identified with a factor that is fundamental to the conception of leadership, namely the motivation to acquire and to exert social influence, so that possessing a certain amount of power would appear to be a necessary requirement to be an effective leader. The main roles played by managers (convincing others, getting them to commit themselves, motivating them, etc.) involve exerting some sort of social influence, so a strong power motive encourages and sustains social influence behavior for members to participate and integrate within a common undertaking
