The musical Oklahoma by Rodger & Hammerstin's takes place in the early 1900's, in the Indian Territory of the early American West. The same time period when Oklahoma was being established as a state. It is a story about Laurey and two men fighting over her: the cowboy, Curly, and Jude, a hired farm worker. It's based on a issue faced by many people of the time, and a conflict between the fam workers and cowboys. As characters struggle to find love, hope , and the "American Dream". While the other side to it a love tale. Curly and Laurey are both young but quite stubborn. To spite Curly Laurey accepts and invitation to the dance from his enemy Jud. This will cause them to duel, and Jude falls on his knee and dies.
Oklahoma changed the Broadway musical by having fully integrated songs and dances. Also it had dark subjects and even showed a death/murder on the stage. Last it included a ballet in to a musical
It was set in the Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906.
The musical "Oklahoma!" was based on the 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. It was first performed on Broadway at its opening on March 31, 1943.
The plot is simple, revolving mainly around the question of who will take Laurey Williams to the box social--the decent Curly McLain or the sinister Jud Fry
It was one of the first musicals to actually use song and dance to tell a story! Before Oklahoma, most musicals were stories with songs added in where convenient; they didn't really advance the plot, they were just for entertainment. In Oklahoma, Rogers and Hammerstein wrote dialogue between characters in song. Laurie's ballet also explains that she is really in love with Curly, even though there is no spoken dialogue. Now we have musicals like Next to Normal, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar which are told entirely through music. Rogers and Hammerstein totally changed the way stories are communicated.
