Fontanelle
The soft patch on a newborn baby's skull is called the fontanelle. The fontanelle allows for the growth and expansion of the skull during the first year of life. It eventually closes as the bones of the skull fully develop.

When a baby is born the skull is not a solid dome as it is in adults. it is a collection of bones held together with thick fibrous sheaths. the bones need to be able to mould or float across each other as the baby passes through the birth canal during its delivery, as it is a bit of a tight squeeze. The skull bones later fuse to become the rigid skull of the adult. you can feel the babies fontanelle or soft spot for months after its birth. the connecting fibrous sheaths are felt as suture lines on the babys skull.
We aren't born with kneecap's and i little bit of hollow bone in our skull. That is why baby's can't walk!
