First, Buddhism provides a well thought out system of living your lif with a minimum of emotional upsets and regrets- the Eightfold Path. Anyone who follows it will find it to be a workable guideline for their lives. Whether you then follow the teachings of Buddhism about reincarnation and the eternal nature of the "soul" is another matter. Second, Buddhism does not depend on or recommend belief in a deity. Since an atheist can lead a moral life following the Eightfold Path and does not believe in a deity - he probably qualifies as a Buddhist. The Dalai Lama himself has often stated that the person need not believe all of Buddhist teachings, a person is free to pick and chose the teachings and instructions that he feels are correct or appropriate for him. If Buddhists are correct you have many lives in which to correct the mistakes and actions of the live you are curently living. If not, so what? You've lead this life as a decent person. So the answer to the question: As an atheist I feel I can call myself a follower of Buddhist precepts as I follow the Eightfold Path and a genrally altruistic lifestyle.
The cycle of rebirth carries on indefinately until enlightenment.
