Islam actually has three distinct holy places namely, the Grand Holy Mosque called "Masjidilharam" in Mecca (where Prophet Muhammad started his teachings during the early Islamic days), the Prophet Muhammad's Mosque called Masjid An Nabawi in Madinah (where the prophet died and was finally laid to rest) and the Masjid Al Aqsa in Jerusalem, Palestine (from where the prophet ascended the the Heavens to meet his Creator, Allah SWT during the Isra' and Mi'raj night journey accompanied by the Arch Angel Jibril as (Gabriel).
Of course the holiest of all three places is the Masjidilharam in Mecca in which lies the Holy Ka'abahin the direction of which all Muslims face during their daily and other prayers.
