NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format. It is NikonÕs RAW file format that features image information and metadata received from the cameraÕs sensor.
There are RAW( Camera Image FileFormat (CIFF) for CANON CAMERA and NEF(Nikon Electronic Format) for NIKON Cameras , the images are of Big size !!then we have Jpeg Images (the same format in which the pictures are clicked from the cameras)

Computer based image can be saved in a variety of formats. The most popular format is JPEG which is a standard devised by the Joint Picture Experts Group. There are other formats depending on what quality of image you want. These are Portable Network Graphic or PNG as well as Quicktime or QT. In the not so distant past each company who made Image Storage Programs had their own, incompatible formats
Changing from one file format to another. A few examples:converting tiff image file to a jpeg image fileconverting raw image file to a jpeg image fileconverting wordperfect document file to a word documentconverting word document file to an openoffice document fileconverting excel spreadsheet file to an openoffice spreadsheet fileconverting windows media sound file to an mpeg sound fileetc.Note: both formats must be capable of storing similar things. An image file can be converted to a different image file format, but not to a spreadsheet file format or sound file format.
In my view, the nikon d40 is not really good one. The most obvious shortcoming of the Nikon D40 camera, is the absence of an autofocus driver in the camera body. What this means, is that if autofocus is important to the way you take pictures, they you are somewhat limited in the number of lenses you can use with the D40. Only about ten percent of the available lenses for the Nikon D40 have autofocus drives built into the lenses. Needless to say, those lenses are considerably more expensive than lenses without autofocus. In addition, most SLR's in this price range, allow you to take pictures in the RAW format, and the D40 is no exception. What is a bit surprising, is that when you take pictures with the RAW and JPEG format at the same time, the D40 only uses a very basic JPEG format. For a camera in this price range I would have expected better. You can have a see. http://www.dinodirect.com/
