Henry Knox was the first Secretary of War, in George Washington's cabinet, from 1989 until the end of 1794.
He was succeeded by Timothy Pickering , from January 1795 until February 1796, just before Washington retired.
Then, it was James McHenry, who continued under President Adams, until May 1800.
