The developers of the first model thought that the little keys looked like the outside of a strawberry. They didn't like the name strawberry so they went with Blackberry.
It's actually not a fruit or vegetable. It's an "accessory fruit", or pseudofruit. A fruit, by definition would have seeds. Strawberries propagate through "shoots" the plant sends out separate from the strawberries, not through seeds. It is also an aggregate-accessory fruit, only one in which the seeds are contained in achenes.
The blackberry was going to be called the "StrawBerry" because the qwerty keyboard reminded them of the little seeds on a strawberry. But "Straaawberry" was to slow of a sound. So they changed it to blackberry, a quick catchy name!
