Michelangelo's influence during the Renaissance was broad and sweeping. He established himself as a master as a painter, sculptor, and architect. His painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican was a remarkable work. He painted much of it on his back on a scaffold.

He sculpted the Pieta', David, and others beautiful works. He also designed the dome of St. Peter's Cathedral.
