∙ 13y agoOn April 4, 1968 James Earl Ray fatally shot Dr. King while on a hotel balcony. Ray was a known criminal and white supremist. Ray fled the country but was captured in London and returned to the US to stand trial. Although he initially confessed to the crime he later recanted and proclaimed his innocence until his death from kidney failure on April 23, 1998.
