i'm not sure what the above answerer means, but I assume that by Pope Benedict you mean the current pope.
Pope Benedict's predecessor was Pope John Paul II, who was the first ever Polish pope. He was born Karol Józef Wojtyła on 18 May 1920 and died on 2 April 2005 and served as pope and Sovereign of the Vatican city from 16 October 1978 until his death on 2 April 2005. In turn, John Paul II suceeded John Paul I who died after a very short reign of just a few weeks.
