Young Joseph Ratzinger was an unwilling member of the group but never attended meetings. A few years later he was also drafted into the German Army but soon deserted and returned to his home. Neither the future pope nor his parents supported the Nazis. In fact, a cousin of young Ratzinger with Down's Syndrome was taken by the Nazis and killed because of his disability. The family despised what the Nazis were doing.
