In the original book and the 1902/1903 stage version of The Wizard of Oz, author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] presented the Wicked Witch of the East without any name. The posthumous 1939 film version similarly maintained a silence as to any name other than Wicked Witch of the East. However, decades later, author Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] gave the name of Nessarose Thropp to the Wicked Witch of the East, and of Elphaba Thropp to the Wicked Witch of the West.

Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] left the Wicked Witches of the East and West nameless in his book and stage versions of The Wizard of Oz. The 1939 film version did likewise. Much much later, however, author Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] gave names to both: Elphaba Thropp to the Wicked Witch of the West, and NESSAROSE THROPP to the Wicked Witch of the East.

In the book and stage versions of The Wizard of Oz, author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] leaves the Wicked Witch of the East nameless. She also remains unnamed in the 1939 film version. But author Gregory Maguire gives her the name Nessarose Thropp in Wicked. According to author and Oz series originator, Lyman Frank Baum, there originally were four witches who divided the land up between themselves. They were all wicked. But Glinda the Good and Locasta the Good were able to take their lands in the South and North, respectively, from the Wicked Witches of the South and of the North. Consequently, when Dorothy appeared there were two good witches, one bad witch, and one position up for grabs. For Dorothy's house had landed on, and killed, the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy ended up killing the Wicked Witch of the West, too, by throwing a bucket of water on her. The Witch melted into brown sugar. So the story ended with two good witches [North and South] and two positions up for grabs [East and West], for both wicked witches were dead.

In the beginning, there were at least four wicked witches in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz. For Mombai was the Wicked Witch of the North. But she was succeeded by the Good Witch. Likewise, the Wicked Witch of the South was succeeded by Glinda the Good. In the original 1900 book edition, and the beloved 1939 film version, of The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witches of the East and of the West remained nameless. But decades later, Gregory Maquire [b. June 9, 1954] wrote Wicked. And in that novel, readers learned that the Witches of the East and of the West were the Thropp sisters. Nessarose ruled in the East, and Elphaba in the West.

Decades later, author Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] gave the Witch the name of Elphaba Thropp. Maguire explained that the first name honored the author by way of his initials. For L Frank Baum initialized as LFB, which was the base for El-pha-ba. Maguire similarly honored Margaret Hamilton [December 9, 1902-May 16, 1985], who played the Witch in the 1939 film version. For Hamilton's passion was the rights of animals. And so Maguire gave Thropp a concern over the well-being of animals, in Oz.

Did the wicked with of the west on Wizard of Oz hate the wicked witch of the east?

No of course not they were sisters! Perhaps a sibling like hate but in the end the wicked witch of the west (elphaba) was mournful over her sister. (This is based on the musical and book not the wizard of oz movie.)

Why did Elphaba or The Wicked Witch of the West from Wicked set fire to Fiyero or Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz?

The play takes certain liberties with the source material. The book 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' is more closely paired with the movie 'The Wizard of Oz' than the musical is. In the musical 'Wicked' Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow when Elphaba cast a spell for him to never die. In the book, Fiyero does not become the Scarecrow. I the movie, the Scarecrow has no connection to the witch prior to his travels with Dorothy.

What is Dorothy from Wizard of Oz's real name?

In the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: Glinda is the Witch of the South. The other witches are only known as "The Wicked Witch of the West," "The Wicked Witch of the East," and "The Good Witch of the North." In the movie The Wizard of Oz: Glinda is the Witch of the North. The other witches are only known as "The Wicked Witch of the West" and "The Wicked Witch of the East." In the book Wicked: Galinda, later Glinda, is the Witch of the South, Elphaba is the Witch of the West, Nessarose is the Witch of the East, and the Witch of the North is never mentioned or named.

Neither the book nor the movie give her any name other than "The Wicked Witch of the West." Gregory McGuire's book Wicked names her Elphaba. It comes from the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz's initials: L F B. If you sound it out, it sounds like Elphaba.

How old is the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz?

Witches (in the cartoon/movie sens) are fictional characters that are ageless. A witch might be 40 or 400, and it doesn't matter either way - she's still a witch. They are ageless.

Why was the witch mean in the Wizard of Oz?

The Wicked Witch of the West is the foil, the complete opposite of Dorothy Gale. That opposition is more apparent in the beloved 1939 film version than in the original 1900 book edition of The Wizard of Oz. In the film, the Witch appears soon after Dorothy's farmhouse lands in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz. From the moment that Dorothy gets the Slippers of the Wicked Witch of the East, she is perceived as the enemy of the Wicked Witch of the West. Until her death therefore, the Wicked Witch of the West is Dorothy's antagonist and her nemesis.

What does the witch do in 'The Wizard of Oz' that she does not do in 'Wicked'?

Really die is what the witch does do in "The Wizard of Oz" but does not do in "Wicked."Specifically, author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) indicates that the Wicked Witch of the West melts into a brown sugar-like mass that Dorothy washes and sweeps out the door. So the witch really dies in the original 1900 book edition and the beloved 1939 movie classic. In contrast, she does not die, but indeed fakes her death by escaping through a trap door in "Wicked," which is a back story or prequel to "The Wizard of Oz."

What does Dorothy steal from the Wicked Witch of the West?

Answer #1Well, your question is a bit deceiving. While the answer might seem obvious, it is not really, as Dorothy Gale did not actually steal the notorious magical silver shoes - or ruby slippers, as played in the movie - from the Wicked Witch of the West. She removed them from the lifeless body of the Wicked Witch of the East, her sister, just after that body went "Poof!" While the Wicked Witch of the West seriously desired those shoes (slippers), they never truly belonged to her from which to then be later stolen. What Dorothy really "stole" from WWW was the life of WWE...Answer #2The Golden Cap, with which the Wicked Witch of the West had summoned the winged monkeys; and food for the journey to the Emerald City. Both were in the Witch's cupboard in her Yellow Palace. Dorothy removed them after the death of the Wicked Witch of the West.Answer #3She also stole the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West after the witch died. She took the broom back to the Wizard. That was her deal with the Wizard. If she brings back the broom of the WWW, then the Wizard will help her get back home to Kansas and also help her friends Scarecrow, Tinman and the Lion.
