Galvani, Luigi (1737-1798), Italian physiologist, noted for his studies of the effects of electricity on animal nerves and muscles. Born in Bologna, he was a medical student and later Professor of Anatomy at the University of Bologna. He discovered accidentally that the leg of a frog twitched when touched with an electrically charged scalpel.
