The fundamental concept is that desire causes suffering and therefore should be removed. Buddhists strive to remove their interests from how people view them or how much money they make, self interest stuff, and strive to help others. The whole idea is that the only problems there are are things that make you unhappy, and things make you unhappy because you think they are problems, so why not just not think they're problems and be at peace with things the way they are.

The four noble truths are central to all Buddhists and might be regarded as the most important values in Buddhism. Many Buddhist would not think of them as beliefs, as they can largely be proven through our own experience.

They are:

The truth of suffering, why we suffer.

The truth of how the suffering begins.

The truth of how the suffering can end.

The truth of how we can end suffering.

The important teachings (of the Buddha) in Buddhism are summarized as follows.

1) To avoid all evil (bad) actions; to do good actions; to cleanse one's mind

2) To have a good mind or keep right concentration in mind; to keep morality; to have a strong insight.

[ The Threefold Training consisting of ethics (morality/virtue), concentration, and wisdom (Insight). It is also known as "The Eightfold Path (to Nirvana)". ]

3) The law of cause and effect (karma) and the Four Noble Truths (following this law)

[ If good (bad) action is done, good (bad) outcome definitely occurs to the doer. ]

4) Three marks of existence: Annica (impermanence), Dukkha (suffering) and Anatta (no permanent self/soul)

Remark: See the answer to "What are the key sayings of the Buddha?" and there, please read correctly by replacing "The Four Nobles" with"The Four Noble Truths" for the third point of the teachings of the Buddha.

The basic beliefs of Buddhism are:

The Three Marks of Existence, describe all living things which are:

(1) Life is full of dissatisfaction (Dukkha in Pali)

(2) Nothing lasts (impermanence (Anicca in Pali) )

(3) That all composite phenomena are without substance (Anatta in Pali) )

The Four Noble Truth describe our situation in this world, which are:

(1) Life is full of suffering.

(2) Suffering exists because of our desires and aversions.

(3) There is a state of mind in which suffering ends (enlightenment).

(4) There is a path to attain this state; That path is called the Eight Fold Path.

The Noble Eightfold Path is the key to enlightenment, which is:

(1) Right View.

(2) Right Intention.

(3) Right Speech.

(4) Right Action.

(5) Right Livelihood.

(6) Right Effort.

(7) Right Mindfulness.

(8) Right Concentration.

The Five Precepts are the path to a moral life, which are:

(1) not to take the life of anything living,

(2) not to take anything not freely given,

(3) to abstain from sexual misconduct and sensual overindulgence,

(4) to refrain from untrue speech, and

(5) to avoid intoxication, that is, losing mindfulness.

But to summarize Buddhism you could say:

Everything is connected; Nothing lasts; You are not alone; there is a way of living in which you do not suffer; act morally.
