Stationed there during my Navy Reserve tour, the Department of Defense (DoD) is located in the Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, though its mailing address is Washington, D.C.

The Pentagon until this year was the largest office building in the world in terms of surface area. It is still considered one of the most efficient office buildings - though its corridors total some 17.5 miles, it only takes a few minutes to go from one side to the other. The lower level houses a mini-mall, complete with banks, bookstores, a department store, drug store, restaurants, etc. The Metro is also available at the level below that.

Working at the Pentagon is an experience in itself, as it is literally a small city. The name of the building comes from its shape - it is literally built in the shape of a pentagon. Each level has 5 "rings", A through E, with the A ring at the inner part of the Pentagon and the E ring at the outer part. Corridors at the angles allow quick passage from one ring to another.

There is a lot of historical memorabilia there as well. The Japanese Surrender documents are in the MacArthur corridor, along with MacArthur's famous corncob pipe, glasses, robe, his father's and his own Medals of Honor. Each military department has as well exhibitions of military art, models, militaria, etc., from the past. The Hall of Heroes has on its walls all those who have received the Medal of Honor. The media section houses the major news service correspondents, whose offices are located in the same ring as the Pentagon Briefing Room often seen on TV. The media ring also has exhibits of famous war photographs from years past taken by war correspondents.
