The Trieste was that famous submarine. It is actually considered a bathyscaphe, but the term submarine could be applied. It dove to the deepest undersea point in the world, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, where the water depth is nearly 36,000 feet. A link is provided to the Wikipedia article on this revolutionary undersea vehicle.

What did the crew of the uss ward see near pearl harbor?

Early in the morning on December 7, 1941, the "U.S.S. Ward,", a navy destroyer stationed at Pearl Harbor, spotted a submarine near the harbor-entrance. As an unidentified vessel in restricted waters (and with war imminent), the sub was viewed as hostile and was attacked: it was quickly sunk through a combination of gunfire and depth charges launched by the "Ward."

What is the navy insignia for submariners?

The Naval Warfare Designator for Submariners is a pair of Gold (Officer) or Silver (Enlisted) dolphins, each one abreast of the bow of a submarine. There are many variants on the design, though most of us have always preferred the older, traditional design (see my Supervisor page). Some Officer's dolphins also include their specialty within the design, where the bow of a submarine is replaced by the specialty insignia, with the dolphins abreast of it. For example, the Engineer will have an encircled propeller with dolphins on either side, Supply Officer (Chop) a Supply Corps insignia, and a Submarine Doctor an oak leaf with a blue jewel thingie. Newer variants also show a modern teardrop/cigar shaped hull to signify more modern boats, but I always preferred the old style with the Fleet Boat bow design. The dolphins are used in the insignia because dolphins historically are considered friends of sailors, and submarines especially. Dolphins are constant companions riding a submarine's bow wave on the surface, and are usually around a boat at periscope depth as well.

How deep can a submarine go?

It varies by the type of submarine. United States, Russia, United Kingdom, China, France, and India are examples of nations who have or are assumed to have nuclear submarine capabilities. For security purposes, governments don't give out full specifications on their weapons of war, especially on something as big, expensive, and instrumental as a submarine. The true depth information is classified, probably above "Top Secret". For the general US submarine fleet, the "official" answer is typically around 600 feet. (According to one Navy instructor it was changed from 400 feet when a documentary was aired accidentally showing footage of the depth meter at a depth of around that depth.)Any Navy in the world who operates a nuclear submarine is going to publish a low ballpark figure in the name of national security and secrecy. If everyone knew the exact depth a submarine could submerse to, it'd be easier to kill them. Wikipedia says a Soviet/Russian class Alpha submarine may have successfully operated at a depth of 4,300 feet. But rest assured whatever the published depth of submarine is, it many times greater than that.
