The first European to visit what is now Puerto Rico was Christopher Columbus. The island was already settled by Taino Indians of the Arawak branch. Researchers conclude these came from the Florida mainland and followed the islands until reaching the Lesser Antilles, which was populated by the Carib Indians, a more warlike tribe.

The Spanish government named Don Juan Ponce de Leon as Governor of the island. He later went to search for the Fountain of Youth. The Governer of Puerto Rico became the first white man to step on what is now the United States.

It is believed that the first inhabitants of the Antilles of which Puerto Rico is a part, arrived from more than one area. The generally accepted theory states that this migration took several thousand years in stages, probably from the north-Florida,south-Venezuela and west-Central America. The earliest arqueological evidence dates from around 2000 BC. In1493 Columbus discovered the island which the Taino natives called Boriquén.The Spaniards first named the island San Juan, for Saint John the baptist and established the first town,Puerto Rico. The names got switched afterwards and now that town is San Juan, the capital city. The Spanish colonized and ruled PR till 1898 when as a result of the Spanish-American war PR became a territory of the US. '
