The Statue of Liberty, is the name of the Statue that lies on Liberty Island. liberty island formerly named bedloes island ---- The official name of the Statue of Liberty is 'Liberty Enlightening the World' or 'Liberté éclairant le monde' - the statue was originally French. The statue was a gift from the French nation to mark the centenary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and commemorates the historical bond between the French and the American nations at the time of the French and American Revolutions. In Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne' Liberty appears as 'Our Lady of the Harbour' - a name she has been known by locally at least since the 1950's - especially by derelicts living in the immediate area.
The name of the island was formerly Bedloe's Island. At the start of the 20th century, people called it Liberty Island. In 1956, the official name became 'Liberty Island'.
Liberty Islamd. . Eiffel, the same man who did the Eiffel Tower, designed it. The statue is made of copper metal pieces that are bolted together. It was shipped over in crates and put together on Liberty Island.
The statue was located on Bedloe's Island, not Ellis Island. I don't know why it was located there unless it was because the tiny island was not good for much, it was owned by the Federal Government and available, and a part of a fort that was there could become part of the foundation of the statue. The statue was a gift from the people of France and was a joint effort between France and the U.S. France supplied the figure of Lady Liberty and the U.S. supplied the foundation. Bedloe's Island was later renamed Liberty Island which is it's name today.
