what do you do when the keys on the keyboard are pressed and the computer displays repeated characters

These keys are nearly always pressed in combination with other keys to change their purpose - such as the classic "Control-C / Control-V" for copy and paste. However, all of these keys can potentially be used on their own if a program is designed to watch for them - most often, this is found in gaming, where keys like Control or Shift can be used for a specific command like firing a weapon or running.
