The Homer Tunnel was opened in 1954.
on the way into Milford Sound on the South Island of New Zealand.
The simple answer is the head of the Hollyford Valley, and the Head of the Cleddau valley. The settlements affected would be Te Anau at the lake of that name, and Milford Sound.
The scenery is rather grand with near vertical mountains rising straight from the sound. If you visit Milford Sound, be sure to take the boat trip out to the mouth of the sound. On the way to Milford, you'll pass through the homer tunnel set amid glacier scraped landscape, then down the Cleddau Valley in which you must pause for a look at the Chasm. There is an excellent visitor terminal at the harbour. I'd recommend taking a bus from Te Anau, so you'll be free to enjoy the scenery. enjoy
Milford Sound is in Fiordland on the south west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is only reached by land via a town Called Te Anau; you then travel along the shore of lake Te Anau, up the Eglington Valley and through the Homer Tunnel.

neither. Milford sound is a classic Fiord - steep-walled valley sides, and entering the sea.
To get to Milford Sound from Auckland, you can either drive or take a flight. The most common route is to drive south to Te Anau, which takes about 16 hours, and then continue to Milford Sound, approximately a 2-hour drive. Alternatively, you can book a direct flight from Auckland to Milford Sound, which significantly reduces travel time.
