The road tunnel to Milford is called the Homer tunnel.
The Homer Tunnel, piercing the Homer Saddle between the Upper Hollyford and the Cleddau Rivers,
The scenery is rather grand with near vertical mountains rising straight from the sound. If you visit Milford Sound, be sure to take the boat trip out to the mouth of the sound. On the way to Milford, you'll pass through the homer tunnel set amid glacier scraped landscape, then down the Cleddau Valley in which you must pause for a look at the Chasm. There is an excellent visitor terminal at the harbour. I'd recommend taking a bus from Te Anau, so you'll be free to enjoy the scenery. enjoy
