The cochlea is part of the auditory system of the ear. It is shaped like a tapered spiral shell, hence the name. It is fluid filled, but most importantly, it contains thousands of hairs which each connected to its hair cell, allow movements in the fluid to be converted into nerve signals, which we interpret as sound. It is actually divided down the centre of the tube by a membrane, and has two 'windows' one round, one oval, which connect it to the middle ear processes.
