In modern CPU designs, virtually all Level 1 and Level 2 caches are now located on-die, and the vast majority of L3 caches are also on-die. Some designs do have the L3 cache located in the CPU package, not on the die.

In the past, it was not uncommon to find L2 and L3 caches located on the motherboard itself, not even in the CPU package.
