When the Pope dies, all the Cardinals go to the Sistine Chapel and lock themselves in there (this is called conclave, which means "with key"). While in there, they discuss and vote on which Cardinal should be the next Pope. They are only allowed to leave the Sistine Chapel once they have reached a decision.

Cardinals complete a paper ballot with their choice for the new pope. If one cardinal receives at least 2/3 of the required votes, he becomes the new pope. If no cardinal has the required majority the cardinals continue voting until one man emerges with the necessary votes.

Usually 15-18 days after the death (or resignation) of a pope, the cardinal electors gather in the Vatican to take part in the secret conclave to select a new leader of the Church. They are locked in the Sistine Chapel except for meals and to sleep when they retire to Casa St. Marta - the Vatican hotel which, in reality, is sort of a dormitory. However, they are still separated from any contact with the outside world. During the conclave the cardinals pray and discuss what sort of pope is needed by the world and who best meets those needs. They vote up to 4 times each day and if the required 2/3s of the vote is not met, the ballots are burned and chemicals added to turn the smoke black that issues from the chimney of the chapel. If the leading person receives 2/3 of the votes plus 1, he is asked if he will accept the office. If he states 'yes' he is asked by what name he wishes to be known. The ballots are then burned with chemicals to turn the smoke white. The bells of St. Peter's Basilica and at many other churches are rung in celebration. After each cardinal has had the opportunity to pledge individually their loyalty to the newly elected pope, the new pope is vested in his papal vestments and the results of the election are then announced from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
