The Richter scale was originally developed to measure the strength or magnitude of moderate earthquakes (magnitudes less than 7).

The surface wave magnitude scale was then developed by Richter and Guttenburg to allow larger earthquake magnitudes to be measured (up to 8).

To measure large earthquakes the moment magnitude scale must be used.

To measure the severity of earthquakes, the Modified Mercalli intensity scale is used in the US and the Macroseismic scale is used in Europe.

The moment magnitude scale is used by geophysicists / seismologists to measure the magnitude of large earthquakes. The Richter scale is still used to make an estimate of the magnitude of large earthquakes and to derive the magnitude of medium and small earthquakes (those with a magnitude less than 7).

The Marcalli scale measures the intensity of an earthquake according to the effect it has on the ground, buildings, people, and so on.

The obsolete scale is the Richter magnitude scale. This scale measures the distance that the ground moves during an earthquake.

the Richter scale measures earthquakes...i learned that in science! we were learning about earthquakes. the moment magnitude scale also measures earthquakes but in a different way...that was a fun unit:D

Why is the Richter scale called this?

Charles F. Richter and German-born seismologist Beno Gutenberg, developed the scale that bears his name the Richter scale. and measures the magnitude of earthquakes.

What two scales measures earthquakes strength?

There are actually about 20 different ways of measuring earthquakes. The 3 main are the Mercalli scale, richter scale, and moment magnitude scale

How does the mercalli scale best demonstrate the power and the destructive nature of earthquake?

The Richter scale measures the force of earthquakes mechanically. The Mercalli scale measures the damage caused by earthquakes. The location of the epicenter of an earthquake can result in a great variation in damage amounts.
