It was called the "New Deal", President Franklin D Roosevelt's program to try to turn around the economy following years of The Great Depression.
The depression had begun in 1929, and by the time Roosevelt took office in 1934 the nation's financial situation was disasterous. Roosevelt's administration created government programs to assist almost every segment of the economy, from banking and industry to farming and unemployed young men. Roosevelt took advantage of the labor surplus to create massive contructions projects such as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Rural Electrification Administration (REA), as well as conservation projects (CCC) in every state.
The FDIC, insuring people's bank deposits, and Social Security (FICA), guaranteeing that no elderly person would be penniless, were elements of the "New Deal" that are still in effect today.
The "New Deal" was vehemently opposed by political conservatives who saw it as socialism and even communism. Also, a few programs did their jobs even though they were not popular with the general public, such as the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA). It can fairly be said that Roosevelt did not worry about being popular or bipartisan; he was faced with one of the most desparate situations that the U.S. had ever been in, and he was dedicated to bringing about recovery in the manner he believed would provide the greatest relief in the least time.
