Longitudinal and circular muscles. These are known as antagonistic muscles, meaning that one relaxes whilst the other contracts.
The rhythmic smooth muscle is called the visceral smooth muscle. It is found in the walls of organs such as the intestines, uterus, and blood vessels, and it contracts and relaxes spontaneously to generate rhythmic movements.
Injection therapy involves injecting a substance into the penis to enhance blood flow and cause an erection. The FDA approved a drug called alprostadil (Caverject) for this purpose in 1995. Alprostadil relaxes smooth muscle tissue.
Striated muscle contracts and relaxes in short, intense bursts, whereas smooth muscle sustains longer or even near permanent contractions.
