A herald trumpet is a special type of elongated trumpet. The tubing is curved similarly to that of a normal trumpet, but the curves are "tighter," meaning that the straight parts of the main tubing stick out much farther (both towards and away from the player). These trumpets are often used in ceremonial situations, as a line of herald trumpeters make an impressive sight. Even better, many of these trumpets are made with small rings attached near the bell and valves from which a flag can be hung.

When you say "key guard" I'm guessing you mean the thing that is sometimes attached around the valves and is often made out of leather. The main use for those is to protect the lacquer on the trumpet, as the oils from ours hands can slowly break down the lacquer and in turn cause the trumpet to look older, more worn, etc. Another use is for a slight change in sound. It might make the sound of the trumpet a little darker or warmer. However the change is usually very, very slight. Hope that helps. Good luck!
