What is D2 tool steel?

D2 steel is a steel that is vacuum heat treated i.e raised to a high temp and rapidly cooled by a vacuum process it is an ideal steel to use for punch and dies or injection mould tools. It is a difficult material to machine and requires a special wheel for surface grinding after heat treatment. It also hardly moves during the treatment process so you can manufacture parts as thin as 2mm and leave only 0.004 for finish grinding. D-2 is a high-carbon high-chromium tool steel manufactured for high abrasive wear applications. D-2 can be heat treated to RC 64. This grade as a low tempering temperature. Many of the common coatings can not be applied because the process temperature used to apply the coating is higher than the tempering temperature of the D-2 tool steel. For this material, D2 tool steel, you can find detailed data check list at www dot astmsteel dot com/product/d2-tool-steel-1-2379-x153crmo12-skd11/. The high chromium content gives this grade some stainless properties, although, it is not classified as a stainless steel. D-2 is used for barrel liners in the plastic molding industry, die components in the metal stamping industry, and many other applications requiring high wear resistance in many other industries. How much does tool steel cost?

Ths cost of tool steel is dependent on many factors including the alloy content and the manufacturing cost. Low alloy tool steels can be boought for less than $2.00 per pound. High alloy tool steels and high speed steels are sold for as much as $30.00 per pound. See the related links below for more information about the cost of tool steels

Where was the steel plow used?

The steel plow was mainly used in the Midwest to break up the prarie sod to make it farmable. After its invention though it has been used everywhere a thick layer of soil needs to be turned. A very usefull tool indeed.

What are the concequences of having zero nose radius and a tool with 2mm nose radius while machining mild steel with HSS tool?

With zero nose radius, the leading cutting corner of the HSS (high speed steel) cutting tool comes to a point. Cutting a surface with a pointy tool gives a non-smooth surface finish. Also, when cutting steel, tremendous pressures are generated at the tool tip. A tool tip that comes to a point is weak at the point and the tip can fracture easily. Unfortunately, this tool fracture makes an uncontrolled, new shape on the cutting edge that often wears really fast, and/or leaves a bad surface finish on the part. With a 2mm nose radius, instead of coming to a point, the cutting edge of the tool is rounded. One result is the same difference you would get in smoothing frosting on a cupcake with the tip of a knife (sharp tip) and smoothing the frosting with the end of a spoon (rounded tip). The rounded tip gives a far smoother surface finish. Also, instead of all of the force being pressed against a sharp tip, the 2mm radius distributes force across a wider edge, making a far stronger tool tip that won't break down nearly as readily as a sharp tip would.

sorta a little bit i would say . but it holds an edge great and the rust is not a giant amount because it is a semi stainless steel just barley not stainless.

Are socket wrenches made out of stainless steel?

Typically, no. Stainless steel is a very weak steel compared to other types. Your cheaper socket wrenches will typically be made out of chrome-vanadium. Higher-end models will use some form of tool steel.

When Chromium is alloyed with steel what type of steel is produce?

It depends on the chromium content. If it is 13% or more, it creates stainless steel. Any less then that would still be considered as high carbon, tool steel, etc.
