Many of the dead Union soldiers were buried in trenches, with a crude wooden marker with the soldiers, name outfit wriiten on it for later identification. The dead Confederates were simply buried in mass graves by the federals. The new Museum at Gettysburg has a large map at the end of the tour. This map locates where they buried men and horses just after the battle. Some symbols represent 10 graves or such. These bodies were moved at a later date, but they had to bury them as soon as possible to avoid diseases.

The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the few battles where almost both entire armies were engaged in the Civil War. There were 93,921 (recorded) Union troops and 71,699 (recorded) confederates were engaged at Gettysburg. About 46,286 casualties took place, leaving 70,866 soldiers from the Union, and 48,468 Confederate soldiers.
This is one of those where the name of the battle was the same for both sides. Usually the confederates named battles after local towns or landmarks, the Union after rivers or streams if there was one. Antietam - Sharpsburg Bull Run - Manassas etc
It is called the Battle of Gettysburg, surprisingly enough.
The union army held several positions: Culp's Hill, Little Round Top, and Cemetery Ridge, to name a few.
