I think you are referring to the ship that was sunk that brought US into World War 1 ----not WW2. It was the RMS Lusitania.
Notorious rather than famous. It was deemed unsinkable but sank on it's maiden voyage with the loss of many lives. The shipping company treatment of the families of the crew was atrocious; they ruled that from the time the Titanic started to sink the crew were no longer in theiremploy and therefore the the crews' families were not eligible for their pay or compensation.
