The priest wears an alb ( usually white) that goes from neck to toe; over the alb he wears a vestment called a chasuble. If not wearing the chasuble he will wear stole over the alb. The chasuble and stole are the colors of the season.

The Stole and Chausable are vestments worn by the ordained priests when celebrating Mass. The Stole is worn for all Sacraments. A deacon also wears a stole sideways. A Bishop also wears a stole, but only priests are ordained Bishops.

The stole is the primary symbol of a priest's priesthood. Even when a priest is wearing just a cassock, say when hearing confessions, he would still put a stole on as a sign of his priesthood and his ability to administer God's absolution. I have seen monk's don a stole over their habit to go to the tabernacle to bring a Host to the altar for adoration. A stole is the bare minimum that a priest should have on when administering any of the sacraments.
