There are several names used for Taiwan. Taiwan was previously referred to as Formosa as dubbed by the Portuguese sailors who laid first sight on the island. Formosa in English translation means beautiful island. More recently, Taiwan is known as the Republic of China or Chinese Taipei.
We Westerners used to call it Formosa, but that wouldn't be "original." That is a Latin word for "beautiful" that some European explorer probably used to name it, not knowing or caring what its own residents called it.
