Off course of other than dates: Mango, Tropical Almond (Lawz), berry (not sure which type, only one type lives but there are different varieties), pomegranate, figs (honey fig is the best), papaya, banana, coconut, wax apples, star fruit, Guava, citrus (grapefruit is the strongest in this region, you can plant this and then graft any citrus you like on it or several on the same tree!), Chiku (aka zapota), olive, and knaar (I think this is native to the GCC, its like a tiny apple, grafted ones are the best don't bother if there not grafted) that's all I can think of, I'm sure there is more.
This would have to be the dates. Today and even before the event of the discovery of oil in the United Arab Emirates dates have and still are a staple part of the Emirati meals. There are hundreds of various types of dates in the UAE-all distinguished through taste, shape, and colour.
Dates can be eaten fresh, dried, softened or as a syrup. It lasts all year-a very sustainable fruit. It is served fresh in the summer on small plates along side all meals of the day, during the colder months in 'tamoor' form softened and packed.
Dates or 'tamoor' can be mixed with bread or cakes and other UAE cruisine. The dried one can be made into petit fours with either nuts or cheese in the center. The soften 'tamoor' can be rolled into small balls and covered in crushed nuts, chocolate, and desiccated coconut.
The rich syrup is used as any syrup would be with bread, over pancakes and other local traditional dishes. Even when a few dates are squashed in a little water, the juice goes towards making some very good savoury dishes.
Dates are always widely used in the United Arab Emirates and very much a favourite and a very important fruit to its people.
