A sworn deputy sheriff apponited as corrections officer assigned to the Cook County Sheriffs Deptment of Corrections (aka) Cook County Jail. Corrections officers must complete a 459 hour academy at the Cook County Sheriff's Institute for Law Enforcement Education and Training.

The Middlesex County jail in Haddam, Ct has not been used to house prisoners since 1972. At that time it became a Correctional Academy for the state of Connecticut, training prison personnel. In 2007 in was given to the town, but it is deplorable condition. Plans are being made to restore it.
Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility was created in 2000.
Plymouth County Correctional Facility was created in 1994.
Holman Correctional Facility is located in Escambia County, Alabama.

A career as a correctional officer is a good choice for anyone looking to start a career in law enforcement and offers several opportunities for advancement with the right education. The basic duties of a correctional officer involve supervising inmates, assuring the safety of the inmates and other employees, adhering to the rules and regulations of the facility and booking new inmates. It is essential for these officers to be able to speak in a clear and authoritative manner. They must also pay great attention to detail, as they will often be required to conduct searches and confiscate contraband. Correctional officer typically work in county jails, federal prisons, or youth detention centers. Although a career in this field offers great stability and benefits, it is certainly not a job for everyone. Correctional officers are in direct contact with convicted criminals and are required to keep order in the facility and follow detailed safety procedures to enforce order. There are several different environments for a correctional officer to work in, that require different levels of education to be hired. If you choose to work at a lower level facility, such as a county jail or a holding cell for people awaiting court hearings, often times you will only need a high school diploma to qualify. This is an excellent step for people wishing to gain experience as a higher level correctional officer or in the law enforcement career in general. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice will help you advance even further in this career. All federal prisons require this degree to be considered for a job as a correctional officer. With enough experience as a correctional officer in a federal prison you can be promoted within the facility to a correctional sergeant, whose duties include supervising the correctional officers and creating shift schedules. You can also get a job as a probation officer, which entails monitoring people on parole. Besides the above educational requirements, a correctional officer also must be at least 18 years old, although some institutions require that the officer be 21. You must also maintain a clean record; any felony conviction will automatically disqualify you from any job as a correctional officer. Lastly, you must be in good health and be able to pass a standard eye examination. Salary for a correctional officer greatly depends on the facility you choose to work. As a lower level correctional officer, you can expect to make approximately $39,000.00 per year. As a higher level correctional officer, you can expect to make approximately $59,000.00 per year.
