What was the purpose of elaborate mosques?

The basic elements of a mosque are a place large enough for the congregation to assemble, especially on Friday, the Muslim sabbath, and orientation so that the faithful may pray facing in the direction of the holy city of Mecca. The wall facing Mecca is called the qibla wall and is marked by a mihrab, which usually takes the form of a decorated niche. In later ages mihrabs became quite elaborate; they are decorated with wooden fretwork in Morocco, with carved and pierced marble in Syria and Iraq, and with lusterware tiles bearing quotations from the Qur'an in Iran.

What connections does the mosque have with the Middle East?

In Islam the mosque is the house of God, the first of which was built in Makkah in Saudi Arabia by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad. In terms of history, this is where the Mosque is rooted. Also, every Mosque has a niche at the front of the prayer room (in front of which the Imam stands) to dictate the direction of The Ka'abah in Makkah - the Abrahamic shrine to which Muslims pray during their daily Salah prayers.

What do you use to make a 3-D model of a mosque?

There are no restrictions in Islam (that I'm aware of) on creating an image of a mosque. However, to be absolutely safe, you should avoid including any people in your model, as this is frowned upon by Muslim orthodoxy. The most important architectural features to include are the minaret (tower) and a large musalla, or prayer hall, which is often domed and almost never has any furniture. There should be a mihrab, or niche, set in the wall facing Mecca, in which direction the room should be oriented. Other necessary facilities are fountains for purification and racks for shoes and coats.
