I have heard it referred to as the Mounds City, presumably because of the nearby Indian mounds. Perhaps there are other nicknames. Its most impressive landmark is its Gateway ( to the West) Arch. At one time it was famous for its shoe factories, maybe someone found a nickname in that.
It's nickname is Gateway to the West. The nickname refers to the Louisiana Purchase, which gave the United States more land westward. Additionally, the arch was built on the location where Louis and Clark began their journey of exploring the west.
Saint Louis is known as The Gateway to the West.
